We are always looking for FLIGHT VOLUNTEERS!

Traveling from Seoul, South Korea, to the US or Canada? You can be a flight volunteer! Please us at Flightvolunteer@savekoreandogs.org

For direct flights from Seoul (ICN) to an airport in the US or Canada, you can fly with 1 to 3 dogs as “extra baggage”. The savings for using flight volunteers versus “cargo freight” is approximately $1,000 per dog. SKD pays the extra baggage fees for the dogs and we take care of everything for you. You don’t have to pay anything or worry about anything!

You may also sponsor a dog’s freedom flight:

  • The standard extra baggage fee is $200 per dog with a total weight of less than 32kg dog and crate.
  • The standard extra baggage fee is $400 per dog with a total weight of 32kg up to 45kg dog and crate.

Most airlines allow a passenger to fly with up to 3 dogs (with an exception of Air Canada, which allows only 1 dog). Small dogs may fly in a soft carrier in the cabin with you, while up to 2 dogs in crates may fly in the climate controlled cargo hold.

Korean Air – Three dogs (one in the cabin and two in cargo hold).

  • Asiana Airlines – Same as Korean Air
  • Air Canada – One dog is allowed.
  • Singapore Airlines – Only those with weight below 32 kg are allowed.
  • United Airlines – Flying out of Seoul/Incheon airport priority is given to the military families/ members based in Korea. However, a small crate less than 8 kg can be brought to cabin and placed under your seat.
  • Delta Airlines – Same as above United Airlines, only military families flying out are allowed accompany dogs.

When you agree to be a flight volunteer, we need some time to look for a foster or forever home at your destination to receive the dog(s). These arrangements may take a few weeks to coordinate so we will be in touch with you during the process. We’ll let you know who will be meeting you at your destination to pick up the dogs. And if no adopters or fosters are available we’ll also let you know.

Once you’ve booked your flight, go ahead and call the airline directly and book the space in the live animal compartment for the maximum allowed dogs. (It doesn’t cost anything to reserve the space). When calling the airline you will typically need the following:

Your name and cell#

Your flight reference/confirmation number

Which leg of the flight you are flying with your dog(s) (i.e. from Seoul to Los Angeles)

Type of animal (dog)

Number of dogs, breed (i.e Jindo), and age

Carrier dimensions (in centimeters, see standard weights and dimensions below)

Total combined weight of each dog and carrier/crate.

Standard 3-dog booking weights and dimensions:

  • Dog #1 Cabin Hold – Jindo, 5 months old – Soft carrier (H 26cm x W 26cm x L 42cm) – 5kg total weight with carrier.
  • Dog #2 Cargo Hold – Jindo, 10 months old – Crate (H 60cm x W 55cm x L 80cm) – 25kg total weight with crate.
  • Dog #3 Cargo Hold – Jindo, 10 months old – Crate (H 60cm x W 55cm x L 80cm) – 25kg total weight with crate.

All the paperwork for the dogs flying with you are going to be in your name. This includes the health/vaccination certificates and the airport quarantine certificates.

What we need in advance:

  1. Your full name, address and cell phone number.
  2. Copy of your passport for the quarantine inspection.
  3. Your airline ticket itinerary with flight number, date and time of departure.

On your day of departure we transport the dogs to the airport (Seoul/ICN):

Our animal transporter, Jong, handles the procedure at the airport quarantine office. Once we have all the required certifications we’ll meet you at the check in counter of your airline.

Note: If you do not want to send us a copy of your passport, you will need to meet us at the quarantine office with your documentation:

  • Korean Air quarantine office is located in Terminal 2, 2nd floor, Public Service Center.
  • Air Canada quarantine office is located in Terminal 1, at the departure hall, at the back of line F.

At your destination:

As your plane nears its destination be sure to check “live animal” on the customs form. The dogs will be brought out to you on a cart near the luggage carousel. Present all requested paperwork as you clear customs.

Note: Toronto airport can be very strict. We send a commercial invoice attached on the crate. Please show this to the Toronto customs officer at the airport.

Note: In rare cases the dogs have been held up by customs. Should this happen you may need to pay a fee to release them. Please let us know if this happens and we will reimburse you.

The foster/adopter will meet you inside the terminal to pick up the dog(s) and the paperwork.

That’s it! Please don’t forget to take photos. Thank you for flying with the dogs!

The below video shows one of the frequent flight volunteers for SaveKoreanDogs. At Incheon/Seoul International Airport before getting on board.

Upon arriving at your destination, arrival hall you will see the dogs on the cart near baggage claim. The dog was checked in as an extra baggage, the dogs are brought over to the baggage claim at the arrival hall. The dog/s are checked in as extra baggage so it comes to the baggage claim. You can use a porter to assist you with the cart (We pay you $20 for that) Just walk out of the gate and the adopter or foster home or pick up person/receiver of the dogs will meet you at the gate. The pick up person/home/adopter won’t miss you as you are coming out of the gate with the dog in the crate. That’s it! Please don’t forget to take a few photos. Thank you for flying with the dogs!

FYI, Toronto airport can be very strict when a rescue group is picking up the dog(s). We send a commercial invoice together attached on the crate. Please show this to the officer at the airport.
